It was an evening like I love them, a quiet evening at home. Mom was reading a book, lying on the sofa in the living room, and I was practicing a piano piece for my Christmas audition. It was a complicated passage with lots of thirty-second notes, sharps and flats, but I was doing my best. Dad wouldn’t be long in coming home and I hoped to be ready when he’ll arrive. I already knew how his return would go. It was always the same...

I finally managed to play the difficult passage in one go, without missing a single note. Mom lifted her eyes from her book and smiled at me.

— Your father is going to be proud, she said, glancing at the clock,  — he shouldn’t be long now.

Suddenly the door slammed, making the walls of the house tremble, a bag flew across the living room like a boomerang, and Dad appeared in the room like a boxer entering the ring, bouncing on the spot, his arms raised toward the sky.
