I invited my friends to come over to the house this afternoon to play cowboys. They arrived with all their stuff. Rufus had put on the police officer outfit that his dad had given him, with the cap, handcuffs, revolver, white baton, and whistle with a little wheel; Eudes was wearing his big brother’s old Boy Scout hat and a belt with lots of wooden cartridges and two holsters in which there were terrible revolvers with handles made in the same kind of bone as the powder compact that Dad bought for Mom after they argued because the roast was overcooked, but Mom said it was because Dad had arrived late. Alceste was dressed as an Indian, he had a wooden hatchet and feathers on his head, he looked like a big chicken; Geoffroy, who likes dressing up and who has a very rich dad who gives him everything he wants, was dressed completely as a cowboy, with sheepskin trousers, a leather vest, a checkered shirt, a big hat, cap guns, and spurs with terrible points. Me, I had a black mask that I’d been given for Mardi Gras, my arrow-shooting rifle, and a red handkerchief around my neck which is an old scarf of my mom’s. We looked great!
