"The Prince and the Pauper" is Mark Twain's first historical novel, published in 1881. It is set in 16th-century England during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI. The story follows two boys: the King's son, Prince Edward, and a poor boy named Tom Canty.

Born on the same autumn day, the boys lead very different lives. By age nine, Tom lives in poverty and has to beg for food, though a priest named Father Andrew teaches him to read and write. Tom often dreams of a royal life. One day, he goes to Westminster Palace, where Prince Edward invites him inside.

The boys decide to swap clothes to experience each other's lives. They realize they look identical. Before leaving, Edward hides the Great Seal  — the King's official stamp. Dressed as a pauper, Edward is thrown out of the palace and mocked by the crowd. Tom's father, John Canty, finds him and mistakes him for his son. Meanwhile, at the palace, officials believe the "Prince" (Tom) has gone mad because he cannot find the Great Seal or remember court rules. This fascinating story is a must-read for every child.
