The Scottish captain Harry Grant was a brave sailor and a true patriot of his country. His country, Scotland, was dominated by England, and he wanted to establish a large free Scottish colony on an island in the Pacific Ocean. His name became very popular. Harry Grant built a ship he called "Britannia" and set off on a journey hoping to discover uninhabited islands in the Pacific.
It was the year 1861. He left his two children, Mary and Robert, with his good old cousin. For a year, Captain Grant continued to write to his family. But since May 1862, nothing had been heard from him.
The cousin passed away, and the children were left alone in the world. Mary was 14 years old, and her brother Robert was still very young. He needed to be raised. But money was scarce. Mary was a brave young girl. She worked day and night. She became a true mother to her brother. For her, alas, Britannia was lost forever, and her father was dead.
But one day, Mary read an announcement in a newspaper that said: "To hear news of Captain Grant, contact Lord Glenarvan!"
